Britain’s Home Office announces new “safe and legal” routes that let eligible refugees come to the UK through community, university and employer sponsorship. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood says the plans are inspired by Canada’s community sponsorship approach, which has helped settle roughly 400,000 people in Canada since 1979. The government says the scheme will launch later this year, though specific intake figures are not given, and it will be “capped.” Authorities say first arrivals are expected in autumn 2027. Under the proposal, community organisations and “trusted” universities would be able to sponsor refugees. In addition, the Home Office says a route for employers to sponsor refugees is expected to open next year.

The announcement also accompanies changes to related immigration and asylum rules. Mahmood says the government will close loopholes it says have been abused and introduce legislation that aims to make it easier to deport people who are in the country illegally, including by tightening how human rights protections are used. The government also plans to restrict family reunion to immediate family members.
