The Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France announces its top winners following the Saturday-night ceremony. “The Violinist,” a hand-drawn feature film from Singapore, wins the festival’s top feature prize, the Cristal. Multiple outlets report that the film is directed by Ervin Han and that Raul García, described by several sources as a Disney veteran, oversees the animation. The film’s story focuses on two young violinist virtuosos set in and after World War II in Singapore.
The awards also recognize “Iron Boy.” While “The Violinist” takes the main Cristal feature prize, Louis Clichy’s debut “Iron Boy” receives the audience award, and one outlet reports it sweeps three awards overall. In the short-category results, Variety reports that Don Hertzfeldt wins best short. The reports note that “The Violinist” competes against several high-profile titles, including “In Waves” and “Viva Carmen,” and that “Iron Boy” was already a Cannes hit before Annecy.
