In Guangdong province, China, a case involving the death of an 18-month-old boy has drawn public backlash after his father signs a “letter of understanding” that indicates forgiveness toward his girlfriend. The child’s injuries were discovered after his mother, the father’s ex-wife, reported concerns and called for a thorough investigation. According to reporting, the ex-wife says she separated from the father in April of the previous year and that they had two sons together. She alleges that the girlfriend killed the toddler, after the boy was found with severe abdominal injuries that later led to his death. Authorities, as described by multiple outlets, have said the girlfriend allegedly inflicted the fatal kicks. The father, however, says he believed the girlfriend was caring for the child at the time and that he is forgiving her by signing the understanding letter. The dispute has led to widespread online discussion and criticism, with attention focusing on the father’s decision to forgive while the investigation and allegations are still being scrutinized.
