Mumbai-based endurance athlete, mountaineer and dancer Saanika Shah, 22, summits Mount Everest after a five-year training period aimed at reaching the peak at the start of 2026, according to excerpts from interviews published by Free Press Journal. She says she set her goal in 2021 during lockdown, after watching the film “Everest” about the 1996 disaster, and began preparing with Everest as a constant end objective through both training and academics. Shah describes Everest as “life-threatening,” saying many people die while summiting and that she experienced moments of genuine fear for her life on the summit night. She recalls being on the Hillary Step and considering a severe fall if she made the wrong move, emphasizing the need for careful footing while exhausted.

Before the climb, Shah performed Bharatanatyam at base camp, at about 17,500 feet. She attributes her dancing background to starting classes at age four and says her mother suggested wearing a traditional costume on the expedition. She explains the dance was carried out on the day of a puja ceremony at base camp for permission and safety for the climb, with team permission granted. Shah reports dancing for about three minutes while shivering in cold conditions, then taking additional time to recover. She climbed with Elite Expedition led by Nirmal Purja (“Nims Dai”) and credits Lakpa Tenjen Sherpa for safe return.
