James Norton is lined up to play Hamlet in a new London West End production of Shakespeare’s tragedy directed and conceived by German director Thomas Ostermeier. Multiple reports say the production will open in the West End next autumn, with fall 2027 cited by one source, though specific dates and the exact theatre have not yet been confirmed. The project is produced by Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions, and the staging details are still pending further announcements.

Norton, known for roles including in “Happy Valley,” is set to take on what is described as his first major Shakespearean stage role. The Guardian reports Norton has commented on being cast as Hamlet, describing the opportunity as both a privilege and a challenge. One report also notes Norton’s most recent stage work was “A Little Life” in 2023, which he characterized as among the most difficult productions he has done.

The productions described are expected to mark Ostermeier’s first Shakespeare play staged in English.
