India’s competition watchdog orders an antitrust investigation into French spirits company Pernod Ricard over allegations that it struck exclusive arrangements with retailers to increase its products’ presence and sales. According to reports, the complaint says Pernod proposed financial assistance to retailers in 2021 in the form of corporate guarantees amounting to 200 crore rupees (about $22 million). The allegations state that the guarantees were offered in return for retailer mandates requiring that Pernod brands account for 35% of the stock on sale at those stores. One report also says the watchdog has been reviewing related allegations since 2024, including claims of collusion with retailers in New Delhi to boost Pernod’s market share. The investigation is being conducted by India’s competition authority, which is assessing whether the company’s dealings with retailers violate antitrust rules. Pernod Ricard is named in connection with its major brands, including Absolut vodka, Chivas Regal whisky, and Beefeater gin.
