A civilian aircraft carrying skydivers crashed near the town of Tomblaine in northeastern France on Sunday, killing all 11 people on board, local officials said. The regional prefect, Yves Seguy, said there were no bystanders among the victims. Officials reported that the aircraft was registered in Germany and crashed in a grassy area near the runway of the Nancy-Essey aerodrome, close to a residential area and two roads, according to an AFP journalist account cited by multiple outlets. The crash killed the pilot, five instructors, and five students, who were on a parachuting-related flight operated by a parachutist school. The cause of the incident was not immediately clear. French authorities opened a technical investigation, and police urged the public to avoid the area around the airport to keep routes clear for emergency services. Medical and psychological support teams were made available for relatives of the victims who were present at the airfield, as well as for other witnesses. The French interior minister was reported to be traveling to the scene.
