Turkish police detain at least 50 people, including a journalist, during an LGBTQ+ Pride event in Istanbul on Sunday, according to organisers and reports. The event goes ahead even though local authorities ban the march. Police increase security around Taksim Square, a central site for Pride events, and erect iron barriers as the gathering takes place. Organisers say the city’s main rally point is locked down, while local officials also ban demonstrations in other key areas, including Kadikoy on the Asian side. France 24 reports that homosexuality is not illegal in Turkey, but that since 2015 Pride marches have been frequently banned and suppressed. Both outlets describe arrests occurring during the Pride activities despite restrictions imposed by the authorities. The governor’s office also limits access and movement in parts of the city, with reports that subway transport around the main gathering areas is restricted. Authorities do not change their position on the ban as the event proceeds, and detentions are carried out by police during and around the Pride gathering.
