The US Southern Command says US military personnel are arriving in Venezuela to support relief efforts after Wednesday’s twin earthquakes struck the country’s northern coast. According to the statement, the assistance focuses on logistics infrastructure needed for humanitarian operations, including expanding airport capacity and reopening a key seaport. The reports specify that Simon Bolivar International Airport, serving Caracas, is partially reopened. It was reopened Saturday after damage from the quakes. A team of about 100 airmen with airfield management expertise and related equipment arrives to help local authorities increase the flow of inbound and outbound air traffic for aid and response operations. The Southern Command also says the US will help reopen a major seaport to improve maritime transport for relief supplies and equipment. The combined airport and port support is intended to help sustain the movement of goods and personnel needed by Venezuelan authorities as they respond to the aftermath of the earthquake.
