A Pune Sessions Court has sentenced 65-year-old Bhimrao Kamble to death for the kidnapping, rape, and murder of a three-year-old girl in Nasrapur village, Pune district, on May 1. Multiple reports say the case was tried through a fast-track process ordered by the state government, with the conviction and sentencing delivered quickly. NDTV reports Kamble is convicted within 60 days of the incident, while other outlets describe a trial that proceeds on an accelerated timetable and a verdict delivered on Monday.

According to the sources, the court found Kamble guilty and rejected the defence plea for leniency and life imprisonment. The prosecution relied on evidence including CCTV footage, testimony, and forensic/medical material. The court characterizes the offence as one of the “rarest of rare,” and it delivers the capital punishment after reserving and then announcing the quantum of sentence.

The proceedings take place under tight police security, and the victim’s family members are present in court. Political leaders and public figures across Maharashtra respond to the verdict, with some welcoming the decision and noting the need to deter crimes against women and children.
