Haryana and Rajasthan sign a Memorandum of Understanding in New Delhi to operationalize the 1994 Upper Yamuna River Board Agreement, a move aimed at streamlining how the two states share and manage Yamuna waters. The ceremony is presided over by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with participation from the Jal Shakti ministry. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini sign the MoU/MoA in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil. The agreement is presented as a step toward resolving a long-running dispute that has continued for about three decades.

Under the agreement, about 580 million cubic meters of water are to be supplied to Rajasthan from the Yamuna Canal through three underground pipelines with a diameter of more than 3.6 meters. Rajasthan’s Sikar, Churu and Jhunjhunu districts and parts of Haryana including Bhiwani and Fatehabad are identified as beneficiaries. The project is described as being worth about ₹33,779 crore and is intended to help convey Rajasthan’s allocated share from the Western Yamuna Canal, reducing dependence on groundwater and supporting agricultural and industrial use. Sources also cite earlier steps including decisions in 2001, pipeline efforts starting in 2018, a tripartite MoA involving the Centre in February 2024, and preparation of a detailed project report.
