A record-breaking heatwave that has affected western Europe for more than a week is moving eastward, bringing extreme temperatures to parts of central, eastern and southern Europe. Several outlets report that a “heat dome” behind the earlier conditions is now producing dangerous heat across a wider eastern swathe, including Hungary, Romania and the Balkans.

Forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts cited by multiple sources indicate temperatures above 40°C are expected in Budapest, Hungary, on Tuesday. Belgrade in Serbia is expected to reach around 38°C, while Bucharest in Romania is forecast to reach about 37°C on Monday. Authorities across the region have issued red warnings for extreme heat, with reports noting alerts in countries including Poland, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Slovakia.

One source also links the broader heatwave to hundreds of deaths in western Europe, noting that the impacts are being closely monitored as conditions shift east.
