Police say a shooting in a German youth welfare centre for mothers and their children leaves six people dead in what investigators describe as a likely “extended family tragedy.” The incident occurs in Stade, a city in the northern state of Lower Saxony, about 50 kilometres from Hamburg, prompting a major police operation that includes helicopters and the closure of parts of the city centre.

Police statements say the victims are adults, including one who dies from injuries in hospital, while another person is wounded and remains in stable condition. Officers arrested a male suspect and a female companion after responding to an emergency call. A separate police statement also references a third suspect being held.

Investigators tell AFP the case is not being treated as femicide and does not appear to involve political motives. Witnesses cited by broadcasters and media outlets describe police confronting suspects attempting to flee by car, including shots fired at the vehicle. City officials say nearby daycare and school facilities are not affected, and no children are reported hurt. Sources also note Germany’s comparatively strict gun licensing rules and that mass shootings remain relatively rare but have occurred in past cases.
