Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai is reportedly placed under house arrest ahead of a planned Congress delegation’s visit to Ayodhya for darshan at the Ram temple. Multiple outlets report that Rai was scheduled to lead a group of party MPs and leaders for the visit on Tuesday, after the party had informed the local administration about the proposed programme.
The Congress alleges that the Uttar Pradesh government and police detained Rai and prevented other Opposition leaders from reaching Ayodhya, calling the action an attempt to stop the delegation from visiting the temple. The party also claims that a Pratapgarh district president was detained by police without any stated reason.
The developments come amid a political dispute over allegations related to Ram temple donations. Times of India and other reports link the Congress accusation to the broader controversy, with Rai and supporters suggesting the government is concerned about potential repercussions. Separately, an Uttar Pradesh minister, Dayashankar Singh, has accused Opposition leaders of lacking faith in Lord Ram by allegedly not visiting the temple or contributing to its construction. The outlets describe the standoff as an escalation of the existing donation-related controversy.
