Sachin Ahir, a Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC, joins the Shinde-led Shiv Sena on Tuesday and immediately files his nomination for the post of Deputy Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council as the party’s official candidate. He is accompanied during the nomination filing by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar. The switch is widely described as another setback for Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), with Ahir earlier regarded as close to the Thackeray camp and an influential figure in Mumbai politics.

Reports also link the move to the Shinde faction’s alleged “Operation Tiger” strategy to attract leaders from the Uddhav Thackeray group after earlier defections that brought additional MPs into the Shinde-led party. Ahir’s move comes shortly after he attended a Shiv Sena (UBT) meeting at Shivalaya in Mumbai on June 22 where Uddhav Thackeray and Aaditya Thackeray discussed strategy. Days before the defection, Ahir criticised the Maharashtra government over flooding and waterlogging concerns during monsoon rain.

Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi reacts by saying that loyalty is declining in politics and that leaders often switch sides for opportunities and benefits.
