Multiple reports say the US is preparing significant upgrades to military and intelligence facilities in the United Kingdom, with spending described in official Pentagon documents. The funding totals more than $4bn (£3bn) and includes work connected to both operational bases and covert activities.
The documents reportedly indicate that some of the planned construction will involve nuclear-weapon storage. In particular, they describe building new bunkers in Suffolk, presented as facilities that could be used to store nuclear weapons. The reporting also notes that alongside the infrastructure for storage, other sites are being modernised to support covert units operating secretive missions.
Separately, the reporting highlights that about $163m is earmarked for a “spy base,” described as secretive in nature. The sources frame the plans as evidence of the UK’s role in supporting parts of the US government’s nuclear and intelligence posture, based on what the filings suggest about the purpose of the new and upgraded facilities.
