At least 14 undertrial prisoners escape while being transported by police from court in the Rawalpindi area to Adiala Jail in Punjab province, according to Pakistani media reports. The incident occurs on Monday when the prisoners are in a police van near Chakian, within the jurisdiction of Sihala police station in Islamabad. Police officials say an altercation and shouting start inside the vehicle as it reaches the Chakian stop at about 4:45pm.

As the escort team intervenes, the prisoners allegedly throw red chilli powder into the eyes of police personnel, helping them flee in different directions. The escapees’ actions lead to a rapid response by the police escort, and authorities are informed and conduct searches.

Police manage to recapture four of the 14 escapees at the scene, while 10 remain at large. A first information report (FIR) is registered on Tuesday against the 14 prisoners and also nominates five police officials present during the incident for alleged negligence and enabling the escape. The FIR cites offences including resisting lawful detention, assault or criminal force to deter a public servant, obstructing public functions, conspiracy, and negligent escape from custody. Search operations continue to locate the remaining fugitives.
