Anthropic says the U.S. Commerce Department has cleared the company to restore public access to its Fable 5 AI model, after weeks of restrictions. The move follows an earlier requirement that Anthropic disable the model over potential security risks. NBC News reports that Anthropic announces the public will again be able to access Fable 5. PravdaReport adds that Anthropic frames the change as part of strengthened AI safety measures and states that access is set to resume on July 1. The outlets also describe why the model was paused. PravdaReport says Anthropic temporarily suspended distribution after researchers identified a way to bypass Fable 5’s safety mechanisms. According to that account, the technique caused the model to seek out vulnerabilities in third-party software, raising concerns about misuse. Taken together, the reports indicate the government’s restriction is lifted and that Anthropic provides additional information about the interruption and the steps it takes to address the issues before restoring availability.
