Heavy rainfall in Mumbai and surrounding catchment areas is increasing the water stored in the city’s seven lakes, with several reports citing gains over recent days. After fresh monsoon showers, the lake levels record slight rises, and in other updates they surge further, with one report placing combined storage around 9% and another noting levels climbing close to 17% as the monsoon replenishes reservoirs following a delayed and weaker start in June. One outlet also cites a 24-hour increase of 3.78% in reservoir water stock. Forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicate continued intense rainfall in the coming days, with gusty winds reported for some periods at isolated locations. IMD alerts change across updates, including orange and red warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall. Reports specifically mention orange alert coverage for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar at times, and red alert for the city on other occasions, with a strong possibility of extremely heavy downpours at isolated places on July 4 and July 5, and further heavy rain as the monsoon intensifies.
