Japan raises fees tied to international travel as part of measures to address issues linked to increased inbound tourism. Starting Wednesday, the country triples its departure tax to 3,000 yen (about $18) per person. The charge applies to all travelers leaving Japan, regardless of nationality, and is collected through travel ticket purchases.

On the same day, Japan also increases visa fees for certain foreign visitors. Visa charges rise fivefold to 15,000 yen for single-entry visas and to 30,000 yen for multiple-entry visas, according to reporting from Japanese and Philippine outlets.

To balance the added costs for domestic travelers, Japan reduces passport application fees for Japanese nationals on the same day the departure tax is implemented. Both sources describe the departure tax change as a funding mechanism for initiatives aimed at managing pressures associated with overtourism.
