Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi loses the Jorhat assembly seat to BJP candidate Hitendranath Goswami by 23,182 votes, according to the Election Commission, in results announced for the 2026 state elections. Gogoi, who contests the assembly election for the first time, polls 46,257 votes, while Goswami secures 69,439 votes, retaining the seat for a third consecutive term. Goswami has represented Jorhat previously—first as an AGP MLA three times and later on a BJP ticket twice. The defeat comes after Gogoi’s recent success in the parliamentary election: he won the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat in 2024, defeating the BJP’s Topon Kumar Gogoi by 1,44,393 votes. Voting for all 126 assembly constituencies in Assam takes place on April 9. Other coverage also links the result to broader political shifts in Assam, noting BJP’s wider electoral performance and Congress’s reduced footprint.
