India and the European Union reaffirm their commitment to strengthening cooperation on sustainable ship recycling, focusing on the process to recognize Indian recycling facilities under the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EUSRR). Representatives from both sides review ongoing audit and compliance steps for Indian ship recycling yards, with the aim of facilitating their inclusion within the EU regulatory framework. Indian Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal meets European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy Jessika Roswall as part of the discussions, where progress on the recognition process is discussed.

Separately, Sonowal outlines India’s broader ship sector plans, including an aim to recycle nearly 16,000 ships over the next decade. He also refers to a financial commitment of USD 8 billion to support the growth of shipbuilding and ship recycling activities. Across the sources, the common theme is cooperation between India and the EU to advance sustainable ship recycling practices and to move forward with the EU recognition and compliance pathway for Indian yards under EUSRR.
