An inquest into the death of 27-year-old Sheffield United player Maddy Cusack, who died at her family home in Derbyshire on 20 September 2023, hears allegations about how the women’s team was supported and how concerns were handled. The court hears that the club had moved its women’s team from part-time to full-time status in summer 2023, and that staff and players felt the transition was rushed and under-resourced. A former women’s team physio, Francesca Carr, says staff were carrying out roles beyond their remit during the early full-time period, describing examples including preparing food for the team.
Former players also describe difficulties raising concerns. Nina Wilson says she tried to escalate worries about manager Jonathan Morgan and that neither she nor Cusack knew who the safeguarding officer was. She advocates for clearer whistleblowing routes and mandatory mental-health education in coaching qualifications. Another witness, Luke Turner, and a former player questioned by Morgan state they did not personally witness bullying by Morgan.
The inquest also hears that sensitive players’ medical data may have been lost across women’s football record-keeping systems used at multiple clubs, with missing records linked to Cusack. The club doctor at the time, Subhashis Basu, admits he did not report the breach adequately.
