India is set to inaugurate its first integrated bio-ethanol refinery in Odisha’s Bargarh district on July 4, according to reports. The refinery is being developed by BPCL with an investment of about Rs 1,775 crore. The project is described as an integrated “1G-2G” bio-ethanol facility, meaning it is designed to produce ethanol using both first-generation and second-generation feedstocks. The plant is planned to convert paddy straw into fuel, supporting the use of agricultural residue for fuel production. The reports also state that the facility is intended to support farmers by creating an additional outlet for straw and related biomass. Overall, the refinery is positioned as part of India’s broader clean energy and biofuel transition efforts, with the project focusing on scaling domestic ethanol production while leveraging waste materials from crop cultivation. The inauguration in Bargarh is the next major step in bringing the refinery into operation.
