Authorities in northeastern Thailand say an 11-year-old boy drives a pickup truck into a group of Buddhist monks participating in a pilgrimage on a roadside, killing eight. Multiple outlets report the boy crashes the vehicle at speed into the procession, after the group is walking as part of their religious walk. Reports describe the procession as including about 35 monks and five lay followers. Police and health officials say five monks die at the scene, with three additional monks dying later from their injuries in hospital. Several other people are injured, with estimates ranging from 14 hospitalized to more than 20 injured overall. One report identifies the truck as belonging to the boy’s parents, and another outlet says the boy uses his parents’ vehicle. Witness accounts cited in international coverage describe the truck approaching and then striking the group. Authorities investigate the cause of the crash, including whether the child lost control of the vehicle after it veered off the road. The incident is reported to have occurred in Mukdahan province.
