Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif departs for Iran to attend the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s former supreme leader, following news that he was killed in a US-Israeli strike on February 28. The Prime Minister’s Office says Sharif is travelling with senior Pakistani officials including National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, PPP leaders Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Nayyer Bukhari, and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. The PMO also says Sharif will offer condolences to Iranian leadership and the families of the deceased and reaffirm Pakistan’s solidarity with Iran.
A high-level Pakistani delegation also arrives in Tehran for the prayers and burial, according to state media. The funeral processions move through multiple locations, beginning in Tehran and continuing to the holy cities of Qom, Karbala, Najaf, and ending in Mashhad. Public funeral ceremonies start in Tehran on Saturday, with Khamenei’s body lying in state at a major complex in central Tehran. Additional reporting says the funeral begins on July 4 and concludes with burial in Mashhad on July 9, while the Prime Minister is scheduled to proceed onward to Turkiye after completing the visit. Representatives from other countries are also expected, and Iranian officials cite the turnout as a response to terrorism and violence amid a fragile ceasefire.
