The Chhattisgarh High Court rules that no child can be compelled to recite Hindu prayers in government schools while dealing with a challenge to a state government circular dated 12 June. The petition contested the circular’s requirement that schools conduct prayers including Saraswati Vandana, Gayatri Mantra, Guru Mantra, and other related mantras, alongside the National Anthem, National Song, and biographies of “great personalities.” The petitioners argued that making such prayers mandatory amounts to religious instruction and promotes a particular religion, while also failing to protect students who do not wish to participate and violating principles of religious neutrality in public education.

During the hearing, the state submitted that the circular had been issued earlier in June but its implementation had not yet started. The High Court then disposed of the petition, while granting the petitioners liberty to approach the court again if any child is forced to participate in the recitation. The court also indicated that it would take appropriate action if compulsion is brought to its notice. A detailed order is awaited.
