Apple’s upcoming macOS 27 “Golden Gate” is expected to remove native support for playing DVDs on Mac computers. Reporting based on macOS 27 Golden Gate beta 2 release notes says Apple’s DVDPlayback framework is not included in the macOS 27 Golden Gate SDK, which prevents developers from using it in new apps. The release notes also indicate that Apple plans to remove the framework completely in a future macOS release.

While Apple’s move reduces the availability of disc-based playback options, it may not eliminate the built-in DVD Player app immediately. Macworld reports that built-in DVD Player support could remain in Golden Gate’s final release, but that Golden Gate is likely to be the last macOS version to include a native DVD app. Users would then need to rely on third-party software (such as VLC) to continue playing DVD media.

Both accounts frame the change as part of Apple’s broader shift toward digital distribution, streaming, and newer playback methods. They also suggest that users may want to digitize existing DVD collections for longer-term access.
