Nigeria’s Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, clarifies that Adire is not approved to replace the NYSC khaki uniform. The clarification comes after the minister had earlier indicated that locally made Adire fabric could be used as a new NYSC uniform, a comment that drew public reactions. In a statement posted on his official X account, Olawande says his earlier remarks referenced Adire (and also Ankara) only as examples during discussions on reforms for the one-year national service programme. He adds that no fabric or design has been adopted or approved to replace the current uniform. The minister says the federal government is still considering different options, which would be assessed for professional outlook, national identity, durability, functionality, and cost-effectiveness, with the aim of promoting national pride and supporting local industry. The responses also follow an earlier Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting where key reforms for the NYSC programme were approved, including retention of the one-year duration, digitalisation measures, changes to leadership structure, and a redesigned uniform. Olawande emphasizes that any eventual uniform decision will be guided by stakeholder engagement and broader reform objectives.
