Iranian media reported that between 41 and 43 million people participated in the ceremony, with Iran’s Press TV calling it “the largest procession the world has ever witnessed”. State funeral proceedings began on Saturday when tens of thousands of Iranians gathered at the Grand Mosalla religious complex in Tehran to see Khamenei’s coffin.  Ceremonies took place across five cities in Iraq and Iran, including Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala and Mashhad - where he was buried in the country’s holiest Shia shrine.  Mourners called for revenge, including leading chants of “Death to America” and holding banners reading “Kill Trump”. Others carried red flags bearing the word “Martyr”. Ali Khamenei took over the role as the country’s political and religious figurehead in 1989 from Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, after serving as Iran’s president during the Iran-Iraq war. He was Iran’s supreme leader for almost four decades before he was killed at age 86 alongside his daughter, son-in-law and graddaughter in a joint US-Israeli air strike on his compound in Tehran. Read More » Rather than destabilising the country, Iran has arguably emerged stronger, exerting strategic dominance by cutting off the Strait of Hormuz and forcing the US to come to the negotiating table.  Meanwhile, Trump’s militarism has lost him popularity in the US, with a majority of American voters agreeing the Iran war is “not worth it”, according to a recent poll. Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has remained out of public view since he came to power, but three of Khamenei’s sons, who had not been seen since the start of the war, attended the funeral. Delegations from several countries were in attendance, including senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Russia, China and Turkey. Supporters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad from Gaza, Hezbollah from Lebanon and Ansar Allah (Houthis) from Yemen also came to pay their respects at the memorial ceremony. Khamenei's body arrives in Mashhad for burial after week of processions After a week-long mass funeral, the body of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has arrived in the northeastern city of Mashhad, where a burial ceremony will take place as the final step. The plane carrying Khamenei's body, along with those of his four family members killed alongside him, was escorted by Iranian military jets and arrived at Mashhad's Shahid Hasheminejad Airport early on Thursday. But Iranian media announced that the burial ceremony will now take place at 2pm local time, eight hours later than originally planned. The delay came just hours after the US and Iran resumed air strikes following a short-term truce. While US strikes on railway bridges disrupted travel between Tehran and Mashhad, Iranian officials insist the delay is not linked to the attacks. Instead, Iranian state media claims the postponement is due to an overwhelming crowd of mourners. Mashhad, the slain leader’s home town, is currently hosting immense crowds from across Iran and Iraq. The city holds particular religious significance because it is home to the shrine of Imam Reza, a prominent figure for Shia Muslims. Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, the head of the late leader’s office, stated that Khamenei had explicitly requested to be buried in the city. According to the Iraqi paramilitary group Hashd al-Shaabi, more than 2.3 million people attended the procession in Najaf. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and top commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also travelled to Iraq to participate in the procession. Meanwhile, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei and Iran's newly incumbent supreme leader, has not participated in any of the public processions. According to a New York Times report, his request to attend his father’s funeral was denied amid fears that he could be assassinated. He has remained entirely out of public view since taking power just days after his father’s assassination. Khamenei’s body arrives in Tehran for funeral ceremonies The body of Iran’s former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, has arrived at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla mosque as funeral ceremonies begin for the leader who headed the country for more than 36 years. Iranian authorities expect up to 20 million people to attend the funeral, which would make it the largest in the country’s history. The ceremonies are set to conclude with Khamenei’s burial at the Imam Reza shrine in his hometown of Mashhad. Khamenei was killed alongside several members of his family in US-Israeli strikes on Iran at the start of the war on 28 February. Body of Seyyed Ali Khamenei brought to farewell ceremony in Tehran The body of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei arrives at the Imam Khomeini Hussainiya, southern Tehran, for the farewell rite, IRNA reported. More than 20 million people are reportedly expected to travel to Iran’s capital for the funeral of Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated by the US and Israel on 28 February, according to Iranian state TV. This would more than double Tehran’s population of roughly 10 million.
