Washington is preparing for a large July 4 fireworks show to mark the United States’ 250th birthday, with officials aiming to set a world record. Multiple outlets report that the “Freedom250” project will use fireworks contractor Pyrotecnico, based in Pennsylvania, to launch more than 850,000 shells from 10 sites around the Lincoln Memorial and the Potomac River. The show is scheduled to begin at about 10:30 pm and is planned to last roughly 40 minutes, as part of a broader program that includes performances, flyovers and acrobatics at the National Mall.

The planned scale is significantly higher than the current Guinness World Record set in Bocaue, Philippines in 2016, and well above Washington’s typical annual fireworks show. The project has marketed the event as a “generational” or “unforgettable” tribute, while the estimated cost has not been publicly disclosed in the reporting cited.

Public health and environmental concerns are raised by experts and residents, focusing on fine particulate pollution (PM2.5), which can penetrate deep into the lungs, and on potential visibility impacts from smoke. Commentary also highlights possible effects on pets, wildlife and trace chemicals associated with fireworks. Others argue fireworks are a longstanding tradition, and that harms should be weighed against the day’s cultural significance.
