Arsenal are reported to have stepped away from negotiations for Leicester City winger Jeremy Monga, opening the door for Manchester City to move closer to a deal. Monga, 16, is expected to leave Leicester this summer after the club’s relegation from the Championship. Leicester signed him to a professional contract last year, which starts when he turns 17 on 10 July, enabling the club to demand a transfer fee.
Multiple reports say Arsenal had held direct talks with Leicester and were considered to be leading the discussions. However, The Athletic says Arsenal believe Leicester’s valuation of around £10 million is too high. talkSPORT reports Arsenal’s most recent offer is below Leicester’s asking price, at about £6.5 million.
As a result, Manchester City have progressed in negotiations with Leicester over Monga’s transfer. Other Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United, are also said to have expressed interest. Monga recently made his Premier League debut as a teenager and scored for Leicester in the Championship last August, when he became the youngest goalscorer in the division’s history.
