A man set himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan on Thursday and later died, according to New York Police Department statements and multiple media reports. Police said they received a 911 call at about 6:30 p.m. and found a 52-year-old man with severe burns. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital and was pronounced dead there. Investigators say the incident is under review and they did not initially provide a motive or comment on what prompted the self-immolation.
Several outlets and pro-Tibet campaigners identify the man as Lobga (also spelled Loga) Rangzen and say he was carrying a Tibetan flag. Reports based on UN surveillance footage describe him placing the flag on a sidewalk at East 43rd Street and First Avenue before the fire, with the self-immolation occurring around 7 p.m. One report says leaflets found at the scene included slogans calling for “China Out of Tibet.” A United Nations spokesperson said the incident occurred after scheduled meetings had ended for the day.
