Maharashtra announces a ban on selling high-caffeine energy drinks such as “Sting” near schools. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Minister Narhari Zirwal says the restriction applies within a 500-metre radius of educational institutions, citing concerns about the impact of energy drinks on children and the need to regulate availability of such beverages around school premises. The decision is communicated in the state legislature and described as part of efforts to protect youth health from caffeine-rich products.
Sources also report that the government instructs schools and other stakeholders to run awareness programmes for students about health risks linked to energy drink consumption. Parents, teachers, headmasters and local bodies are asked to report any violations so that action can be taken.
Zirwal says enforcement will use existing laws, with strict action against sellers found violating the restriction. The reporting also notes that the government expects authorities to prevent harmful food items and caffeine-laden beverages from being sold in and around school campuses.
