Delhi University reappoints Yogesh Singh as its vice-chancellor for a second term, making him the first vice-chancellor to secure two consecutive terms in the role. All outlets report that the reappointment is made by the President of India. According to an Education Ministry official cited in one report, the reappointment follows changes to Delhi University’s governing statutes approved by the central government.
The reports state that in 2023 the government revives a nearly decade-old proposal and approves an amendment to DU’s statutes, which allows the vice-chancellor’s re-appointment. Under the earlier framework, the Delhi University Act barred a second term through re-appointment. Singh was originally appointed as DU vice-chancellor in 2021, and his reappointment is presented as the first instance of a consecutive second tenure after the statutory changes take effect.
