Multiple outlets report that Russia is preparing to import a shipment of Japanese-produced aviation kerosene (jet fuel) routed through South Korea. Reuters, citing three industry sources, says the cargo is expected to total at least 200,000 barrels and is scheduled to depart from Chiba, Japan, in the first half of July. The fuel would reportedly be brought near the South Korean port of Yeosu, where it is transferred to another tanker for its final destination, which is not disclosed. The reported route is said to have been used previously, with the last delivery along the same path occurring in February 2022, before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and before Japan was placed on Moscow’s list of “unfriendly countries.” Separately, Kyiv Post frames the move as part of a deepening fuel crisis, noting that Russia is importing gasoline from countries including India, Kazakhstan, and Belarus but still facing shortfalls relative to demand. Together, the reports indicate Russia is seeking alternative sourcing and logistics to address supply constraints affecting aviation fuel.
