Ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary on Saturday, a new nationwide poll finds that many Americans are unsure what the milestone is meant to commemorate. The survey, conducted by the Cato Institute, reports that only 53% of respondents can correctly identify what “America 250” is celebrating. According to the reports, the correct answer is the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. As a result, nearly half of those polled—about 47%— either do not know what the anniversary celebrates or cannot provide the correct identification. Both outlets describe the poll as highlighting low public awareness of the specific historical event tied to the 250th anniversary. The findings come shortly before America 250 activities begin, with the date marked as Saturday.
