The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chair, Ola Olukoyede, says suspected internet fraudsters (“Yahoo boys”) accessed a serving judge’s bank account and withdrew more than N7.2 million during the night. Olukoyede reports that he was alerted around 1am by a distress call from the judge in a South-South state after the money was stolen. Speaking at the public presentation of two books authored by retired High Court judge Justice Alaba Omolaye-Ajileye, Olukoyede described the incident as fraud involving an account meant for the judge’s child’s school fees.

According to reports from multiple outlets, the EFCC chair says the funds were recovered quickly, with the money returned the same day the theft was reported. The accounts do not provide details of the exact transaction method or the identities of those involved, but they consistently describe the scale of the loss (about N7.2 million) and the EFCC’s swift action after receiving the alert.
