Uttarakhand police and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) are investigating allegations of irregularities and alleged theft or misappropriation of donations at the Badrinath temple. Multiple reports say the suspended Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) employee Pramod Nautiyal was arrested after complaints about the handling and deposit of devotees’ offerings. Police and investigators cite CCTV footage from the temple’s donation counting room, which they say shows Nautiyal “suspiciously” hiding or stealing cash and other items, including gold and silver coins, shaligram stones and offering envelopes. Police also report that footage from multiple counting dates was seized and examined, alongside statements from employees present during the counting process and other evidence.

In parallel, the Uttarakhand government orders or directs high-level inquiry measures into broader irregularities in donation handling. The BKTC has suspended Nautiyal, registered an FIR and formed an inquiry committee, with reports stating that officials named in the inquiry are being asked to take action. Reports also indicate further questioning of temple committee members and continued evidence collection as the investigation proceeds.
