Australia’s men’s team reacts to its penalty shootout defeat by Egypt as goalkeeper Lucas Herrington faces scrutiny after missing a kick in the World Cup last 32. Multiple reports say Aziz Behich and Jackson Irvine publicly support Herrington, with Behich telling him that missing “is part of the game” and that taking the penalty was meaningful for the team. Herrington, 18, is described across the coverage as the youngest starter Australia has fielded at a men’s World Cup. One account recounts the moment after Herrington’s penalty: his team’s response includes Awer Mabil moving toward him as the player who missed receives support. The missed attempt is described as his side-footed kick going too high and striking the crossbar. After Egypt completes the shootout, Herrington is reported to turn away from the goal area, reflecting the emotional impact. Egypt progresses to the World Cup last 16 following the shootout result, while Australia remains without a knockout-stage win and continues searching for its next opportunity.
