Ukraine denies that Russia has fully captured Kostiantynivka, a strategically important city in Donetsk region. Multiple outlets report that Russian military officials told President Vladimir Putin on Friday that Russian forces had taken control of the city, a target Moscow has sought as part of its advance through Donetsk. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukraine’s General Staff say the city remains under Ukrainian control. Ukraine’s “East” command and General Staff also state that Ukrainian units continue defensive operations within Kostiantynivka and on its approaches. While reporting continues of combat around the city and defensive actions by Ukrainian forces, the Russian claim of complete capture is contested by Ukrainian authorities.
Analysts cited in the reporting say that capturing Kostiantynivka would give Russian troops a foothold to push north along a defensive belt that currently forms a main axis of Russia’s campaign. The city is described as the southernmost of several key settlements forming part of Ukraine’s defensive line in the heavily industrialized Donetsk area.
