Britain’s outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer warns that his probable successor, Andy Burnham, cannot focus only on domestic issues as the UK faces ongoing international turmoil. In an interview released Saturday, Starmer—speaking for the first time since announcing his resignation on June 22—says whoever leads the ruling Labour Party will confront the same global conflicts and volatility during their term.

Both sources report that Starmer argues international developments are directly linked to domestic outcomes, including household bills and economic pressures. He points to the need for continued attention to issues such as the war in Ukraine and tensions affecting international shipping and energy, including the Strait of Hormuz.

The reports also note Burnham is the only candidate so far to take over the centre-left Labour leadership, with a possible assumption of office by mid-July. In a separate social media question-and-answer session, Burnham says he would give the same support to Ukraine as Starmer. Starmer says he will remain in Parliament until the next vote.
