A PwC survey indicates UK households are preparing for another period of financial strain. Consumer confidence declines over the past three months at the fastest pace since June 2022, a period associated with soaring inflation following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and higher commodity prices. The latest fall in sentiment is also described as the sharpest quarterly drop since the start of the Ukraine war.

Across age groups, respondents report worsening personal financial wellbeing compared with the previous quarter, with PwC finding differences between affluent and less affluent households narrowing, while gaps between younger and older people widen. The survey points to broad concern about the cost of living, with most respondents saying rising living costs are their main worry. Many households plan short-term cutbacks, including reduced spending on household items such as food.

PwC also links concerns to macroeconomic factors, including expectations for further food price increases and potential impacts from energy prices as the UK energy price cap is set to end in July. The survey period is described as occurring after the Easter bank holidays, and sources also cite uncertainty around the economic effects of the Iran conflict and related global price pressures.
