Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw says Indian Railways has utilised about 98% of its capital expenditure (capex) by the end of February in the current fiscal year. He adds that capex spending was close to complete by early March, describing the pace of project execution as rapid and indicating that spending was later paused to finish the fiscal year. Vaishnaw also links the investment and infrastructure work to future travel choices, saying upcoming rail corridors are expected to reduce journey times on several routes. According to him, reduced travel times would make trains more attractive than flights on those corridors. He further cites progress on electrification and track expansion, saying that 49,000 kilometres of tracks have been electrified and that 36,000 kilometres of new tracks have been added. The minister’s remarks indicate an ongoing effort to develop new railway corridors and improve service competitiveness against air travel, based on improved connectivity and reduced travel durations.
