Hervé Renard steps down as Tunisia coach following the team’s elimination at the World Cup group stage. Renard, 57, took charge in the middle of the tournament after being appointed by the Tunisian Football Federation on June 16 to replace Sabri Lamouchi, who was sacked after Tunisia lost 5-1 to Sweden in their opening match.
Renard’s tenure lasts for two matches. Tunisia is beaten 4-0 by Japan and 3-1 by the Netherlands in the remaining group games. After the elimination, Renard announces his departure, saying on Instagram that his “adventure (with Tunisia) has come to an end.” He thanks the Tunisian federation for allowing him to take part in the 2026 World Cup and describes the experience as an honour.
Tunisia’s federation did not report any contract extension, and Renard tells AFP he came “for this World Cup.” The reports also note that Renard had been scheduled to lead Saudi Arabia at the World Cup before he was dismissed from that role less than two months before the tournament began.
