The railway ministry postpones the formal inauguration of tunnel-boring work for India’s Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project because of inclement weather in Mumbai. Officials say heavy rain has continued for several days and that the India Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts for the next few days. A senior official states the ministry decides to delay the “official” launch of underground tunnel boring by tunnel boring machines, which was scheduled to be inaugurated by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw from Vikhroli to the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station on Sunday.

Despite the postponement, the ministry directs the project operator, National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), and contractors to begin tunnel boring operations immediately to prevent schedule slippage. Reporting across outlets also links the tunnelling efforts to Afcons Infrastructure Limited, which is undertaking the TBM-driven tunnelling and related works as part of a larger underground tunnel package, including a planned undersea section. The project is aimed at providing high-speed connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad by 2027.
