Iran’s embassy in Armenia criticises US President Donald Trump after comments about the funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In a post on X, the embassy says “People can be killed, but ideals cannot,” arguing that while Khamenei is dead, the “ideals” associated with him continue. The embassy also says Trump “broke a perfume bottle” in effect, with its “scent” spreading widely, and adds that Trump “doesn’t understand these things” because he has “neither civilization, nor history, nor honor.”

The response follows Trump’s remarks reported by Axios. Trump says he was “shocked” by the large turnout at Khamenei’s funeral, which he expected to be met with less public support. Trump also tells Axios he could “eliminate everyone” attending the funeral but chose not to, saying that if he did, “there would be nobody to negotiate with.”

The embassy’s message frames the public mourning as meaningful and disputes Trump’s view that the funeral crowd reflected limited popular support.
