The African Democratic Congress (ADC) raises concerns that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and its chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, are facing heavy pressure from Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue. ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi makes the allegation in an interview with The Sun, describing INEC as caught between maintaining its independence and managing political influence from the APC.

Abdullahi says the commission sometimes yields to that pressure while at other times resists it to uphold its independence. While expressing sympathy for Amupitan over the alleged environment of pressure, he argues the issue goes beyond any individual and concerns the integrity of the INEC institution itself.

The ADC framing compares INEC’s role to that of the judiciary, saying INEC is also effectively “on trial” and has an opportunity to demonstrate its loyalty to the Nigerian Constitution and the public rather than political interests. The ADC comments come amid broader political activity and continuing concerns about how the 2027 elections will be conducted.
