Ahead of the July 7-8 NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey is pressing the United States for approval to buy additional F110 jet engines needed for its KAAN stealth fighter programme, analysts say. US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Ankara, and sources cited by outlets report Trump previously told President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan he would make him “very happy” regarding Turkey’s push to acquire F110 engines and related steps toward rejoining the F-35 fighter programme. Analysts expect the talks could translate into a “green light” for F110 GE engines—estimated at roughly 40—after delays tied to US political clearance.

Turkey’s KAAN is designed as a twin-engine stealth aircraft intended to replace the Turkish Air Force’s F-16s and is part of Turkey’s effort to develop fifth-generation combat capabilities. Turkey has already received an initial batch of 10 F110 engines and says negotiations for an additional 80 are ongoing. The US has linked engine sales to Turkey’s 2017 purchase of Russia’s S-400 missile system. Washington expelled Turkey from the F-35 programme in 2019 and later imposed CAATSA sanctions.

Sources agree that any summit progress is unlikely to quickly resolve the broader F-35 dispute, because lifting CAATSA sanctions requires congressional action and the S-400 situation involves further constraints.
