The International Swimming League (ISL) says it will pay overdue prize money owed to athletes from its 2021 season and is looking to rebuild trust ahead of a possible return. ISL commissioner Ben Allen tells Reuters that the league will pay more than 300 athletes a total of just over US$7 million. Allen says the ISL sends letters to affected athletes on Sunday informing them of the payments, which are scheduled in four instalments. Under the plan, 25% of the amount will be paid by the end of this year, with the remaining instalments expected annually thereafter, although the league says it may accelerate if possible. Among swimmers included are several Olympic champions, including Ryan Murphy, Sarah Sjostrom and Summer McIntosh. Some Russian athletes are expected to receive their funds later than others because of technical issues involving their bank accounts. The move comes after years of reduced activity for the ISL, as the professional circuit works to re-establish operations and address concerns from athletes about delayed payments.
